Both my friend's and the original poster's descriptions clearly indicate systems infected with one of the W97 series Word macro viruses, making their systems persistent threats to their correspondents. Unfortunately, much of the resulting blog discussion is confused, ill informed, or unconvincing at best. All the recipients of my friend's message (including me) report otherwise clean systems with regular AV scans (I think they're all using updated NIS or NAV - I know I am). The description given by the original poster to your referenced blog is essentially what my friend reported from his experience. Luckily, all had the good sense not to open the attachments. The ones that received the attachments from my friend all had AV allerts identifying the reported W97M Word Macro infection, as did comcast whose server blocked his message to me. Neither I, nor my friend, nor several recipients of his message with Word attachments that started this incident have been misinformed.
